Cookie policy – Basketball betting
A site about basketball odds uses only a small amount of tracking technology, and this policy lists it. Cookies are small text files that a browser saves on a device; local and session storage entries and counting pixels act in much the same fashion and are included.
Why consent matters
Regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 (PECR) requires clear and comprehensive information and the user’s consent before information is stored on a device or access is gained to what is already there. Strictly necessary storage for a service the user asked for is exempt. The UK GDPR sets the bar for consent (Article 4(11) and Article 7): it must be freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous, and withdrawing it must be as easy as giving it. If cookies lead to personal data being processed, the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 apply as well.
Cookies set at once
A group of strictly necessary files is set with no separate choice, as the site could not run reliably without it. These files keep sessions open, spread load across servers, shield forms from abuse and store the cookie choice. Session files end when the browser is closed. The stored choice is kept for twelve months at most.
Cookies set after consent
Remembered settings, such as the comparison tables opened last, come from functional files. Page-view counts and records of which pages are read come from analytics files, which help the editors improve the content. Both groups need consent in the cookie banner first. Shortened IP addresses are used for analysis, and profiles across different sites are not built.
Embedded services
Videos, maps and other embedded services can set files of their own. Their provider’s privacy rules then also apply, and objections go to the provider. Basketball betting does not set advertising cookies for personalised ads unless the banner offers a clear choice.
Control by the user
Consent can be reopened or withdrawn at any time through the “Cookie settings” link in the footer. The withdrawal works for the future only and leaves earlier processing lawful. Browser privacy settings can also block and delete cookies, and the makers’ help pages show the steps for Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge. With necessary files deleted, the banner returns and some features may be unavailable for a short time.
Regulator
Complaints about personal data may go to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the supervisory authority of the UK. How data is processed is explained further in this site’s privacy policy.
