Horse racing & greyhounds

A basketball fan who turns to racing meets a different vocabulary and different money rules, so racing is set out apart from court sports.

Each-way splits a stake into two bets, win and place, so the total stake doubles; how many places are paid, and at what fraction, is quoted from the market and changes by race and operator. Starting price, ante-post, non-runners and Rule 4 are the other terms worth knowing for horses and greyhounds alike.

Tax treats racing separately. UK horse racing bets placed remotely stay at 15% General Betting Duty when the general remote rate becomes 25% on 1 April 2027, and pool betting falls under Pool Betting Duty at 15%.
